Module 12: Video Rewiew

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I choose Andy Warhol: Images of an Image  because I would like to get to know the man behind the art. I choose Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s because I would like to know more about art in the 50's and 60's.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image key concepts
Andy Warhol-was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement know as pop art
Advertising-the activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services
Silk Screens-a printmaking technique in which a mesh cloth is stretched over a heavy wooden frame and the design, painted on the screen by tusche or affixed stencil.
Ten Lizes-his silk-screened multiple portrait of Elizabeth Taylor
Art Journalist- reporting and discussion of the art

Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s key concepts
Abstract Expressionism-post world war II art movement in American painting, developed in New York in the 1940's
Figurative Art- sometimes written as figurativism, describes artwork,particularly paintings and sculptures that is clearly derived from real object sources and are therefore by definition representational.
Franz Kline- know for being apart the Abstract Expressionist movement, action painter.


2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate the readings in the text because they both talk about modern art, and pop art.


3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I liked the Andy Warhol video I found his relationship with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor very interesting. The video was definitely a visual to pop art.

Module 11 :Art Gallery Visit #2 (Part 2)








Module 11: Art Gallery Visit #2

Step 1: The Exhibition

Questions about the exhibit:
1. What is the title of the exhibit?

  • Art In Craft Media 2015

2. What is the theme of the exhibition?

  • Fine Arts


Step 2: The Gallery: Burchfield Penney Art Center

Questions about the physical space:
1. What type of lighting is used?

  • There is bright white wall lighting

2. What colors are used on the walls?

  • The walls are all white

3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?

  • White walls, display lighting on the walls and ceilings, hard wooden floors.

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?

  • The movement is slow and scattered,everyone was spaced out



Step 3: The Artwork

Questions about the artwork:
1. How are the artworks organized?

  • The artworks were in no specific order.

2. How are the artrworks similar?

  • Some of the statues were similar and there were some quilts that were similar.

3. How are the artworks different

  • The artworks are different because they all are by different artists, all used different unique materials.

4. How are the artworks framed?

  • Most are not framed but the ones that are, are in a glass box or a picture frame with a clear box surrounding it.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?

  • They are identified by a square white card displayed on the artwork or on the wall depending on what the artwork is, in black writing.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?

  • The proximity is some are close and some are more spaced out and distant.

Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise

Artist-Pat Pauly
Title- Time of Day: Nine to Five , 2015
Media: Fiber, artist printed fabric, commercial fabric, machine 
  1.  Description: I see two colorful rectangle quilts that are put together to form a square
  2. Analysis: Principles used are pattern and movement,Elements used are color, texture and shape.
  3. Bracketing: The patterns remind me of city building, one patch of the quilt also reminds me of a latter.
  4. Interpretation: I think the artist was trying to capture the work day, people that work in a busy city,time is always going it never stops.

Title- Mantelpiece of Detritus Shaped by the Wind, 2014
Media- Porcelain, Found Objects, Cone 6, Cone 04
  1. Description: I see a long rectangle shape attached to the wall with different objects on top of it.
  2. Analysis:  Principles used are Emphasis on some specific objects Elements used are color and shapes because of the different shapes and colors
  3. Bracketing: The reminds of the Last Supper because of the different fruits I see
  4. Interpretation: I think the artist was trying to show a feast, maybe a holiday feast because of the colors used red and green.

  1. Description: I see a wood shaped as a state, I see objects joined together
  2. Analysis:Principles used are proportion and unity Elements used are texture, color, shape, and lines
  3. Bracketing: This reminds of a shape on a map, the beach and the ocean
  4. Interpretation: I think the artist is trying to say, their is peace and a calmness when you are on or live near the water.


What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

  1. I thought it was very interesting visiting the Gallery there weren't that many people there at the time I visited so I really got to look around and take in everything. I loved the space how everything was in a way spread out but close enough to appreciate the different perspectives. I love the white lights and the all white walls, it really makes the artwork pop.

  • I chose The Impact of Cubism because I'm not that familiar with it and I wanted to know more about it. I chose Dada and Surrealism for the same reasons.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The Impact of Cubism Key Concepts

  • Cubism-An early 20th century style and movement in art, especially painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and later, collage.
  • Non-classical-not classical
  • 1912
  • Paul Cezanne-one of the most influential artists in the history of twentieth century painting
  • First World war


Dada and Surrealism Key Concepts

  • Dada Movement-artistic and literary movement that begin in 1916 in Zurich, Switzerland,it arose as the reaction to World War I.
  • Abstraction-freedom from representational qualities in art
  • Collage-sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric onto a backing
  • Photo Montage-a montage constructed from photographic photo montage


3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

  • The videos relate to the readings in the text because they talk about collage art and cubism.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

  • I thought the films were informative and they added a better understanding because I could see visual examples.

Module 10: Video Rewiew

Videos: African Art: Legacy of Oppression and African Art


1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose these two videos because they both relate to each other they both deal with African Art and I find African art very beautiful.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
African Art: Legacy of Oppression
  • Tradition-customs or beliefs from generation to generation
  • Rituals-a religious or solemn ceremony
  • Performance Art-a performance presented to an audience within fine art context
  • Sub-Saharan Africa-the area of the continent of Africa that lies South o the Sahara desert

African Art

  • Abstracts-no physical existence, existing in thought
  • African Mask-a part of a ceremonial costume
  • 20th Century
  • Culture-a way of life of a group of people

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos relate to the readings because they both talk about tradition,culture and religious beliefs.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
 I liked the films they kind of went hand and hand which is why I picked them. I learned more about African art and some things I thought I knew about African Art weren't true.


Module 10:Mask Making

I picked these images because I like the shapes, the use of color and 2 of them and I like the simplicity of the Dean Gle Mask.

Description 1: I see a black mask with oval lips, almond shaped outline of eyes,and a long nose,the chin is somewhat pointed.
Description 2: I see a circle shaped mask, the eyelids are red and yellow, the mask has a whole which looks like a mouth at the bottom of the mask the mask is black.
Description 3: I see a square shaped mask,its the light blue/sky blue, with the color navy blue,white, and red as accent colors.
Analysis 1- The principles and elements that were used are Empahis in the lips and a element would be Shape because of the shape of the chin.
Analysis 2- Principle would be the movement of the colors that are used and the element would be the shape of the eyes
Analysis 3- Principle used is pattern because of the design of the mask,the element used is color because of the vibrant colors used.

  • In my mask I used color, texture, shapes,lines, patterns and movement.
5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.

  • I really like my mask I feel like its goofy and playful side to it,I really like the movement of the pink hair and the texture of the ears. I thought it was fun creating this mask.
